The report provides information about the criticism of the Vilnius University almanac Kūryba at the the end of the 1950s. Members of the Department of Lithuanian Literature at Vilnius University, which at that time came under strong ideological criticism from the Party and the government, were associated with the almanac. It was criticised by Glavlit, and after the editors did not agree with the comments of the censors, an audit of the Department of Lithuanian Literature was carried out. After this audit, several lecturers were blamed for distorting Marxist-Leninist ideology, and were forced out of their jobs (Irena Kostkevičiūtė, Meilė Lukšienė, Aurelija Rabačiauskaitė and Vanda Zaborskaitė). After these events, the university refused to publish the Kūryba almanac. 

The Balys Sruoga collection holds various documents, including notes, manuscripts and correspondence with other Lithuanian writers. The documents illustrate well the situation of intellectuals and writers in Soviet Lithuania under Stalin. The manuscript of Sruoga’s novel Dievų miškas (The Forest of the Gods), written in 1945, is especially valuable. The manuscript was very severely criticised by the authorities and heavily censored. It was only published in Soviet Lithuania in 1957. 

The letter reveals Soviet government policy towards the Catholic Church and the community of believers, and the difficult conditions for priests in providing catechisation to the community. It shows not only the political struggle between the Soviet government and the Catholic Church, but also the attempts to find a form of coexistence. There were some grey zones in negotiations and communication between these two, when an understanding of common interests (such as keeping up moral standards in Lithuanian society, or restricting and fighting against negative tendencies such as alcoholism) led to attempts to come to an agreement in slowing down the anti-religious campaigns by the Soviet government, and limiting anti-Soviet rhetoric from Catholic priests.

Georgi Yordanov Bozhilov, nickname Slona [The Elephant], was a Bulgarian painter. In 1959, he graduated from "N. Pavlovich" Higher Institute of Fine Arts, specializing in decorative and monumental art. 

In 1959, he painted "The Strike of the Plovdiv Tobacco-Workers". Only a few years earlier, in the spring of 1953, Georgi Bozhilov was probably a witness of the strike of the tobacco-workers, mainly women, against the conditions of work at the tobacco factories and storehouses nationalized by the Stalinist regime. The strike which developed into workers' revolt was brutally suppressed by the state militia; there were many victims, killed, wounded and arrested people.

Georgi Bozhilov coded the event by ostensibly representing the strike of the tobacco-workers of the late 1939-1940. Because of the extreme censorship, the jury in the capital was not aware of the strike of 1953. Thus, the work was not only accepted to take part in the exhibition but it also participated in the First International Biennial of Young Artists in Paris.

Georgi Bozhilov – The Elephant was not a victim of the repression of the socialist regime and since the 1960s he participated in joint art exhibitions of the Union of Bulgarian Artists. While still living, he had over 25 individual exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad (the USSR, Turkey, Poland).

His work is an example of how by using particular works of art the artists managed to evade the censorship of the authorities and to code social messages and criticism towards the regime. Krasimir Iliev stresses the fact that such works "outline what was happening in different periods" but in order to "read" them one needs "reflections, insight and knowledge".
