Hungarian Motion Picture Public Foundation

The Hungarian Motion Picture Public Foundation was responsible for the distribution of the financial means dedicated in the national budget to supporting the film industry. It was established in 1998 by the government and 26 professional film organisations to succeed the Hungarian Motion Picture Foundation.

Its basic goals were to support the production, distribution and preservation of Hungarian films in every genre, to promote the distribution of Hungarian films abroad and foreign films in Hungary, and to represent the Hungarian film industry. Its tasks included the support of any kind of film production with Hungarian origin. The public foundation itself was responsible for working out the rules for the distribution of resources.

Beside the board of trustees, six vocational colleges fell under the jurisdiction of the Hungarian Motion Picture Public Foundation: feature film, animation, documentary, film distribution, scientific-propagatory, and a Research, Training, Experimental, Book and Periodical-Publishing Vocational College.

The Board of Trustees was nominated by the founders and appointed by the Minister of Culture with the consent of the government.

In 2012 the government decided to cease the operations of the Hungarian Motion Picture Public Foundation.

Hungarian National Gallery

The Hungarian National Gallery (MNG) is the largest public collection documenting and presenting the changes and developments in the fine arts in Hungary. Its collections cover the entire history of art in Hungary, from the 11th century to the present. Its establishment fits a process specific to Hungarian museology, in the course of which from 1870 specialized museums were detached from the Hungarian National Museum, founded in 1802.

In is through this decentralization process that collections of fine art objects made it into the Museum of Fine Arts. The acquisition of works made the division the Hungarian and the international materials urgent. As a result, the New Hungarian Gallery of the Museum of Fine Arts displays its holdings starting from the Nagybánya group in a separate building, but within the framework of the same institution.

The collection of the Municipal Gallery was taken over by the state in 1953, which meant its merging with the Museum of Fine Arts. The optimal presentation of the expanding Hungarian materials became less feasible. The idea of an entirely separate art museum featuring Hungarian art came up in cultural politics after 1956, which led to the birth of the Hungarian National Gallery (MNG) in 1957. The basis of its collections were the Hungarian materials from the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. The MNG operated first in the Curia building at Kossuth Square in 1957.

The next turning point of the history of the museum was when it moved to the renovated B, C, and D buildings of the Buda Castle. The first exhibition opened there in 1975. That was also the time of the founding the predecessor of the Contemporary Collection, under the name Modern Hungarian Department. In 2005 the A building also joined MNG, where large scale temporary exhibitions take place. In 2012 the MNG reintegrated into the institutional framework of the Museum of Fine Arts. Its collections amount to 110,000 artworks today.

Hungarian Province of the Society of Jesus

The Society of Jesus settled in Hungary in 1561, and despite the hardships the order developed dynamically in all three parts of the divided country. The golden age of the order ended in 1773, when under political pressure from the European great powers, Pope Clement XIV disbanded the order. The Society of Jesus was restored in Hungary in 1853. In 1866, they settled in Budapest. In 1909, the independent province of the Hungarian Jesuits was founded. In 1950, the communist regime suppressed the activities of the Jesuits and many members of the order were imprisoned and interned, while many others emigrated. In Hungary the order was granted permission to function again in 1989.

Hungarian Rock Museum and Hall of Fame Association

Since the foundation of the Hungarian Rock Museum, the Hungarian Rock Hall of Fame Association has managed it as a non-profit organisation. As a consequence, due to the Association Act (Egyesületi Törvény), the items in the collection cannot be allocated to other entities. In other words, the collection can only belong to another non-profit organisation or to the National Property Fund.

Hungarian Scientific Research Fund

The Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (HSRF) was created in the last years of the party-state in Hungary. Beginning in the early 1980s, support for academic research was cut. The Hungarian government created an independent fund to support researchers and to help them catch up with sciences in the West (it was the first government of the Eastern Bloc to do so). Established in 1986, working as an independent as of 1991, and based on a law since 1993, the HSRF is the only source of funding exclusively for basic research in Hungary. The system of applications helps prepare Hungarian scientists for participation in international research organizations. Like the European Research Council (ERC), it supports high-level basic research. HSRF’s work is mainly financed out of the state budget. Its grants provide extra resources for the best researchers and research institutions in Hungary. The institution represents the sciences in Hungary through active participation in international organizations, as well as participation in jointly financing cooperative research programs launched by European research funding organizations. HSRF’s proposal system has developed flexibly in recent. The call system contains two types of proposal and one supplementary type since 2012. The first and most popular type is the research proposal. The second type is calls in support of young researchers. The supplementary proposals provide assistance with publication.
In 2015, the Office of the HSRF and the National Innovation Bureau, which is a central government organ, were united, and the National Research, Developmental and Innovation Bureau was established. Now, the Office of the HSRF is part of this organization.
