István Csurka (1934–2012) was a Hungarian writer, dramatist, and politician. Between 1952 and 1957, he studied dramaturgy at the Academy of Theater and Film Art. During the Revolution of 1956, he was the leader of the Academy’s militia. After the suppression of the revolution, he was interned for six months. After his release, he worked as a freelance writer. Between 1973 and 1986, he was a journalist for the daily Magyar Nemzet [Hungarian Nation]. In 1981, he became a member of the presidium of the Writers’ Association. As a member of the Hungarian nationalist-populist opposition, he was one of the founders of the Hungarian Democratic Forum (HDF). In 1988, he became a member of the editorial committee of the periodical Hitel [Credit]. In 1988, he became was a member of the presidium of the HDF. In 1991–1992, he served as vice president of the party. Between 1990 and 1994, he was a member of the Hungarian Parliament. In 1993, he was expelled from the HDF. He then founded the Party of Hungarian Truth and Life, and he served as its president until his death. Between 1998 and 2002, he was a member of the Hungarian Parliament again.
