Provenance and cultural activities

• The collection consists of almost 4,000 files. It was organised by the Lithuanian Special Archive, based on various documents found in the former offices of KGB operatives. The collection is periodically supplemented with files sent from Lithuanian State Security.

  The collection consists of various documents on the surveillance of anti-Soviet organisations, members of the intelligentsia, and youth organisations. KGB reports, annual plans and correspondence contain information about these 'targeted groups', their ideas, and examples of what the regime understood as anti-Soviet.

Description of content

• While fond (No 34) of the 5th Department of the Soviet Lithuanian KGB Archive has almost disappeared (many files were destroyed, some of them, the most important, were taken to Russia on the instructions of the leadership of the USSR KGB of that time), there are a few files from that department that were left in the archive. Most of them are stored exactly in the collection of fond K-1, collection 46. The files of the 5th Department (responsible for ideological counter-intelligence) begin with file No 1611, and end with file No 2081. While chronologically these files encompass all the Soviet period, there are only a few items from any one year.

  The collection has many interesting files about cultural opposition, including the surveillance files of the intelligentsia, and dissidents such as Fr Julius Sasnauskas, the political prisoners Petras Cidzikas and Balys Gajauskas, original copies of underground journals and magazines, such as Aušra and Lietuvos katalikų Bažnyčios kronika, and manuscripts of Dievas ir Tėvynė.

  The collection has some anti-Soviet manuscripts and memoirs written by priests (Robertas Grigas), and politicians of the interwar Republic of Lithuania (Juozas Urbšys).
