Opening of the studio for electronic music at the Academy of Music, Belgrade
Srđan Hofman began working with electronic music at the start of the 1980s in the electronic studio of the Third Program of Radio Belgrade. This studio, founded in 1972 by Vladan Radovanović and Paul Pignion, was the only one of this kind in Belgrade.
The Academy of Music had to wait for more than a decade for its own electronic music studio. Srđan Hofman has commented on this, explaining that the financial conditions of the Academy were limited and the institution’s primary goal was "classical" music education and not experimenting. He also adds that not having such a studio was nothing unusual, since during that time, electronic studios existed only at radio stations (the electronic studio at Columbia University in New York being an exception). However, Hofman, then already teaching at the Academy of Music in Belgrade, initiated the creation of an electronic music studio there and thanks to his advocacy, the Academy opened it in 1985. Ever since, Hofman has dedicated his efforts to a large degree to electronic music. Therefore, the opening of the studio at the Academy was hugely significant for Hofman's career and his collection.
