Eckert, Edeltraud
Edeltraud Eckert was a student at the Pedagogical Faculty of Humboldt University in Berlin. She belonged to a small circle who fought for freedom of opinion and expression in the GDR and had contacts with the militant anti-communist "Kampfgruppe gegen Unmenschlichkeit" ("Task Force against Inhumanity"). In 1950, following the distribution of leaflets, she was arrested and a Soviet military tribunal sentenced her to 25 years imprisonment. While incarcerated she worked as a mechanic. After a work related accident she was refused adequate treatment and on 18 April 1955, she died from the consequences of her injuries. Her letters and prison notebooks are part of the "Archive of suppressed literature in the GDR".
