The manuscript of Sruoga’s novel Dievų miškas (The Forest of the Gods), written in 1945, is an especially valuable document. The Soviet authorities called the novel worthless, and even dangerous to the regime. The manuscript was heavily censored. It has remarks made by the censor, and the writer’s responses, objections and refutations. Sruoga was heavily criticised for his creativity and his inventiveness, and for his independent stance. This stance was unacceptable to the censors and to the regime. In the end, the publication of the novel was banned. (The novel was only published in Soviet Lithuania in 1957.)
