The Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) is the most important academic and artistic institution in the country. It was founded in 1841 and has since changed names several times. Today it is organized in eight departments according to academic disciplines. Various other academic institutes (Institute for Balkan Studies, Institute for Byzantine Studies, and the Institute for Serbian Language, among others) are also housed within SANU. SANU has its own library and archive. The archive contains valuable collections on nineteenth- and twentieth-century history.
