Donation of Knuts Skujenieks collection to the National Library of Latvia
The Knuts Skujenieks collection holds 352 manuscripts and documents from the poet‘s personal papers, collected all through his creative life, starting with 1963, when he started to write poetry and to correspond with his wife and colleagues from prison in Mordovia. It covers the period until 2009, when Skujenieks begun to give this collection, along with 2,000 books from his library, to the National Library of Latvia. This was done up to 2014. Although some of his memorabilia was donated to the Museum of Literature and Music, all the most important manuscripts became part of the collection kept at the National Library. The collection reflects the development of the civic consciousness and poetic language of Skujenieks while he served his seven-year term in a Soviet prison camp, as well as his literary work, contacts, and political activities in the 1980s and 1990s.
