In 1994, the Hungarian Parliament passed a degree according to which the documents of the state security authorities that operated between 1944 and 1990 have to be placed in a special kind of archive created specifically for this purpose. The Historical Office was established in 1997 (its successor is the Historical Archives of the Hungarian State Security, which has existed since 2003), where the documents on the relationships between historical churches and repressive organizations have been made available.
