This is the collection of the prominent Yugoslav intellectual and dissident, Zoran Đinđić. During the seventies, Đinđić was active in the Student Union of the Faculty of Philosophy and in informal groups of the radical left. He left Yugoslavia in 1977 and returned at the beginning of the 1990s, becoming one of the most important leaders of the opposition movement after the state’s disintegration. From 2001 to 2003, he served as prime minister of Serbia. The largest part of the collection is focused on the period after 1990, thanks to his active political engagement, while a smaller part covers his dissident activities during the socialist era.

Provenance and cultural activities

This collection is kept in the Archives of Serbia under the name Zoran Đinđić’s Personal Collection and contains items that his widow, Ružica Đinđić, handed over to the archive in December 2007. The collection was, until then, in the private possession of Zoran Đinđić and his family.

The collection’s earliest materials are from the late 1970s and Đinđić’s stay in Germany. Materials from this period cover his PhD studies at the University of Konstanz (including his student ID and other documents, as well as a few texts in German). The location of materials from earlier periods, including his childhood and student days in Belgrade, and especially materials from his political engagement in the early 1970s is not clear. One can assume that Zoran Đinđić’s mother stored it until her death in 2016. There is, therefore, the possibility that these parts of his legacy will be added to this collection.

A small part of the collection covers Đinđić’s academic and political activity during the 1980s, containing his critical texts on constitutional and legal theory, later published as a collection of essays under the title Yugoslavia as an Unfinished State. The largest part of the collection covers Đinđić’s political activity after his return to Serbia in 1990, at which time he became president of the Democratic Party and one of the leaders of the opposition movement (1994-2000). The majority of materials are from his time as prime minister of Serbia (2001-2003).

Although the personal collection contains material on Đinđić’s academic career, mostly in Germany, comprising photographs, files related to his studies, political and theoretical texts he published during the 1980s on the structural and constitutional problems of Yugoslavia, the largest part of the collection consists of notes, documents and video recordings from his active political engagement, especially during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The personal collection contains 39 boxes. The archival material is not clearly and systematically arranged either thematically or chronologically, hampering research. Researchers can access the collection per boxes. Boxes 3 and 20 contain the most relevant material on Đinđić’s dissident period, and include his documents, notes and newspaper articles.
