Provenance and cultural activities

• The collection is stored in the Lithuanian Communist Party Documents Archive, which is a subdivision of the Lithuanian Special Archive. Paleckis submitted the first documents to the archive of the Institute of Party History in 1963. Paleckis’ collection covers the period from 1919 to 1981. In 1991, the Institute of Party History was reorganised into the Archive of Lithuanian Social Organisations, and Paleckis’ collection (fond no. 17541) was opened to the public and researchers. In 2001, the Archive of Lithuanian Social Organisations was reformed again, and became a subdivision of the Lithuanian Special Archive.

Description of content

• The collection consists of various documents: personal documents, notes made by Paleckis, manuscripts of speeches, and correspondence with writers and artists. The most valuable documents in the collection are letters from Lithuanian writers and victims of stalinist repressions.

  The collection gives us an understanding not only of Paleckis’ personality and the government’s cultural policy, but also of various manifestations of cultural opposition. The most interesting and valuable part of the collection is the correspondence with Lithuanian writers and scholars, and the letters of the Lithuanian intelligentsia who were deported to Siberia. Paleckis’ correspondence with the Lithuanian intelligentsia covers the question of the national cultural heritage and its preservation.
