Kovács, András, ed. Marx in the Fourth Decade, 1977. Collective volume
The sociologist András Kovács sent a circular letter to roughly a dozen friends in February 1977. The content of his question was the following: The mindset of most of the members of my generation is shaped by Marxism. Those who considered themselves Marxists or those who developed their intellectual outlook against Marxism, they all knew what to believe and what to refuse and why they did exactly that. Today all this has already changed. This motivated me to ask: what is Marxism in your opinion and what is your relationship to it?
21 people answered his letter, which resulted in a text 268 pages in length. Kovács made 20–30 typed copies of the book and gave it a title: “Marx in the Fourth Decade.” This became one of the first instances of Hungarian samizdats.
