Provenance and cultural activities
The collection is a set of documents from the Students at the Faculty of Arts, University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně (UJEP), in Brno. The constellation was created gradually during the years 1968-1970; containing organisational documents, opinions, notes from meetings, manifests, posters, photographs and prints from mainly Czechoslovak student magazines, from the Prague Spring period. The association has officially been in operation since March 1968, formed by a group of students and graduates at the UJEP Faculty of Arts. It was an unusual organisation for this time, since it was completely independent of the centrally managed mass youth and student organisations. Due to this fact and also because the association was officially authorised by the South Moravian National Committee (KNV), in the second half of 1968, a platform for other student organisations were formed: the strike committee, and also in January 1969, an action committee. Both of these platforms within the association had an entire university competence. At this time, the Students of the Faculty of Arts became a place for formulating free opinions of the whole university. In addition to the initiative started within the university, it also developed contacts with other universities in Czechoslovakia and abroad (for example the Freie Universität in West Berlin). The association also became the initiator of the founding of a new student organisation, the Moravian Union of University Students that would take into consideration the interests of Moravian universities and their students, besides the existing Czech and Slovak Union. With the coming normalisation, the independent and democratic platform of the association was becoming an increasing problem, after which the club was dissolved in 1970. After the association ended, one of its leading members, Jan O. Eliáš, created a collection of the preserved documents. Work on creating the collection ended in 1971 by publishing its handwritten catalogue. At the time of the normalisation, the collection kept in his personal ownership and, after a change in political conditions, he had agreed with the management of the Masaryk University Archive about its placement in this institution. This was done in 1993. The following year's material was added to the convoy by the ownership of one of the other members of the association, Martin Potůček.
